Born and Bred in Kentucky

The great state of Kentucky is an American treasure, due in large part to the state’s well-known variety of interests, industries and distinctions, such as horse racing, college basketball, tobacco, bourbon whiskey distilleries, baseball bats, and coal.

“The Bluegrass State” (Kentucky’s moniker) was the 15th state admitted in the Union in 1792 and is home to President Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, Hodgenville. The state is bordered by Indiana to the north, Ohio to the northwest, West Virginia to the west, Virginia to the southwest, Tennessee to the south, Missouri to the southwest, and Illinois to the west.

One of the nation’s smaller states in size, Kentucky ranks 36th in land area but is the 26th most populated state. Kentucky’s largest cities are Louisville—home to the world-famous horse track Churchill Downs and the Louisville Slugger Factory—and Lexington, the self-proclaimed “Horse Capital of the World” and residence of the University of Kentucky. Frankfort, Kentucky’s capital city, is one of the smallest state capitals in the country.
