There are certain structures from America’s past that have grown in appreciation over time. Covered bridges are one example. Lighthouses are another. Luckily for Maine’s tourism industry, they have a large number of these beacons; so many, in fact, Maine is known as “The Lighthouse State.” Back in the early 1900’s, over 70 lighthouses were fully functioning eyes of the night for coastal sailors.
Today, 65 lighthouses still stand, and many are open for visitors to enjoy their rich history and textbook definition of a picturesque scene. The 65 total represents the third-most lighthouses of any state in the nation, making Maine a perfect place for sightseers to visit.
