Utah has some of the most unique scenic surroundings of any state in the country, as everything from snowy mountains to dry, sandy desert is represented. The state is generally rocky, as most of Utah is on a plateau higher than 4,000 feet above sea level. However, elevations are all over the place, due to the high number of mountains, plateaus and buttes (the highest of which is upwards of 13,000 feet).
Often rocky, Utah holds three very different regions: the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Rocky Mountains. Although these geological descriptions probably aren’t how you think of Utah on first thought, you have likely seen the state’s unique formations before: countless movies—especially westerns—have been filmed in its diverse, interesting-looking areas, such as the breathtaking Monument Valley in the state’s southeastern region.
