Marvelous Maryland

Maryland, a state with not one but two nicknames—“The Old Line State” and the “Free State”—has historical significance, first-rate universities and two massive metro areas (Baltimore and Washington). Maryland is a Mid-Atlantic state that is bordered by a variety of different states due to its unique state formation: Pennsylvania to the north, Delaware to the east, the District of Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia to the south and west.

Even though this makes it sound as if Maryland is fairly spread out, its land area is actually not very large. Maryland is 42nd in the nation in area. However, the state is not lacking for residents, coming in at 19th in population and, due to its proportionally small size, is fifth in population density. The state’s largest city is Baltimore while the capital city is Annapolis, home to the prestigious United States Naval Academy. One of the state’s most notable claims is its ranking as the number one median household income in the nation for three consecutive years.
