Minnesota, dubbed “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” and the 32nd state admitted to the Union, is the state furthest north amongst the contiguous United States, making it a popular outdoor recreational spot. Located in the upper Midwest of the country, Minnesota is the 12th largest state in area and 21st highest populated state in the nation. A majority—nearly sixty percent—of the state’s residents live in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area (also known as the “Twin Cities”); an interesting note is that Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota while Saint Paul is the capital city.

Due to its location—bordering Canada to the north, Lake Superior and Wisconsin to the east, Iowa to the south, and South Dakota and North Dakota to the west—Minnesota is prone to extreme temperatures: very cold, snowy winters and hot summers.
